Speed and Scale: Anthropic Acquires Bun as Claude Code Breaks $1B Barrier

The AI leader secures the world’s fastest JavaScript runtime to power the next generation of agentic coding.

    • Record-Breaking Growth: Claude Code has reached $1 billion in run-rate revenue just six months after its public launch.
    • Strategic Acquisition: Anthropic is acquiring Bun, a high-performance JavaScript runtime, to accelerate AI infrastructure.
    • Open Source Promise: Bun will remain open source and MIT-licensed, continuing to serve the wider developer community.

Anthropic is redefining the velocity of software development. In a double-header announcement, the company revealed that Claude Code—its agentic coding platform—reached a staggering $1 billion in run-rate revenue in November, just six months after its general release in May 2025. To sustain this explosive growth, Anthropic is acquiring Bun, the breakthrough JavaScript runtime known for its incredible speed and efficiency.

    The Era of Agentic Coding

Claude Code has rapidly evolved from an internal experiment into essential infrastructure for industry giants like Netflix, Spotify, and Salesforce. As the “world’s smartest AI model for developers,” it represents a shift toward agentic coding, where AI acts as an autonomous partner in building software. However, as AI adoption scales, the underlying tools must keep up.

This is where Bun steps in. Founded by Jarred Sumner, Bun is an all-in-one toolkit—combining runtime, package manager, bundler, and test runner—that is dramatically faster than the competition. With over 7 million monthly downloads and adoption by agile companies like Midjourney, Bun has become critical for AI-led engineering.

    Building Faster, Together

The acquisition formalizes a long-standing partnership. The collaboration between the two teams was crucial for the recent launch of Claude Code’s native installer. “Bun represents exactly the kind of technical excellence we want to bring into Anthropic,” said Mike Krieger, Chief Product Officer. “Jarred and his team rethought the entire JavaScript toolchain from first principles.”

For developers, this union promises faster performance and improved stability within Claude Code. Crucially, Anthropic has committed to maintaining Bun as an open-source, MIT-licensed project. The company will continue to invest in Bun as the runtime of choice for all JavaScript and TypeScript developers, ensuring that as AI scales, the infrastructure powering it remains robust, fast, and accessible.
