    Samsung Unveils Plan to Accelerate AI Chip Delivery

    Samsung Electronics has unveiled an ambitious plan to speed up the delivery of artificial intelligence (AI) chips by integrating its leading memory chip, foundry, and chip packaging services. This streamlined process aims to reduce production time significantly, catering to the booming demand for AI technology.

    “We are truly living in the age of AI. The emergence of generative AI is completely changing the technology landscape,” stated Siyoung Choi, President and General Manager of Samsung’s foundry business, at a recent event in San Jose, California.

    A Unified Approach to AI Chip Manufacturing

    Samsung’s strategy involves creating a one-stop shop for clients, facilitating a single communication channel that coordinates its memory chip, foundry, and chip packaging teams simultaneously. This approach has already cut the production time for AI chips by around 20%.

    Marco Chisari, Executive Vice President of Foundry Sales and Marketing, emphasized that the projections by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on the rising demand for AI chips are realistic. Altman has previously expressed a need for multiple new chip factories, indicating a massive future demand.

    Leveraging Advanced Chip Architecture

    Samsung is one of the few companies that not only sells memory chips but also offers foundry services and designs its chips under one roof. This vertical integration, once seen as a disadvantage due to potential conflicts of interest, is now viewed as a significant strength given the high integration required for efficient AI chip production.

    The South Korean tech giant highlighted its cutting-edge chip architecture, Gate-All-Around (GAA), which enhances chip performance while reducing power consumption. As chips become increasingly smaller, pushing the limits of physics, GAA technology is crucial for developing more powerful AI chips.

    Although competitors like TSMC are also working on GAA technology, Samsung has a head start and plans to mass-produce its second-generation 3-nanometer chips using GAA in the latter half of this year. Additionally, Samsung announced its latest 2-nanometer chipmaking process aimed at high-performance computing, with mass production expected by 2027.

    Samsung projects that global chip industry revenue will grow to $778 billion by 2028, driven primarily by the increasing demand for AI chips. The company’s comprehensive approach, combining advanced technology and streamlined production processes, positions it well to capitalize on this growth.
